A concept for onboarding and induction learning for Northern Rail, translating brand identity into a clear, accessible and engaging digital learning experience.

Summary

This project explores how Northern Rail’s identity can be carried through into onboarding learning, using screen designs and interaction patterns to support understanding from the outset. Working in Figma, I created structured templates and layouts designed to translate effectively into a Storyline 360 build.

The concept focuses on breaking content into manageable learning bites, using animation, navigation cues and visual hierarchy to guide the learner. Accessibility was considered throughout, including captions, text-to-speech and clear navigation patterns.

Challenge

The challenge was to take onboarding content that could easily feel dense or procedural and make it engaging and easy to follow. Induction learning often risks overwhelming new starters, particularly when introducing values, expectations and customer facing scenarios.

It also needed to stay true to Northern Rail’s branding while ensuring the design supported clarity, accessibility and real understanding rather than just visual consistency.

Solution

A structured set of screen designs and templates was created to guide both the learner journey and future development. This included menu systems, animated content and interactive components such as click and reveal and persona led scenarios.

Visual cues such as motion, pulsing navigation and card based layouts were used to support intuitive interaction, while content was broken down into smaller sections to improve retention. The concept provides a clear foundation for a scalable, branded learning experience that can be built and expanded within Storyline 360.
